The new "Hamilton"? "Hadestown" sweeps the 2019 Tony Awards with 8 wins

The 73rd Annual Tony Awards were held last Sunday at Radio City Music Hall, hosted for the second time by beloved British comedian and late night television host James Corden. A musical enthusiast, Corden is no stranger to the stage himself, having performed in multiple productions on Broadway, the West End, and other UK theatres.

The big winner of the evening was Hadestown, taking home 8 of its 14 Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Scenic Design. An intriguing new musical adapted from Anaïs Mitchell's 2010 concept album of the same name, the folk-opera weaves together the ancient Greek myths of Orpheus & Eurydice and King Hades & Persephone. Poetic and vibrant, Hadestown takes guests on journey of romance and hope in a world full of greed and hate.

History was made by Ali Stoker as she became the first wheelchair user to be nominated and win a Tony Award (Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical, Oklahoma!). Oklahoma! also took home Best Revival of a Musical, while The Ferryman won Best Play and The Boys in the Band, with its all-star cast, was named Best Revival of a Play.

Fun and flamboyant, The Cher Show won for Best Costume Design of a Musical by Bob Mackie (costume designer to the real life Cher) and Stephanie J. Block received the Tony for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her turn as the iconic Goddess of Pop.

Other notable wins from the evening include the hilarious comedy hit Tootsie for Best Book of a Musical, and Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for Santino Fontana's transformation as the show's star. Audiences will fall for the story of Michael Dorsey, an out-of-work actor who will go to any lengths for a job - even disguising himself as outspoken actress Dorothy Michaels to win hearts and defy all odds to become a Broadway sensation.

Whether you're looking to be swept up in romance and drama, nonstop laughs, or showstopping dance numbers and countless costume changes, this year's Tony winners have it all - and Shackman Associates is ready to help make your Broadway evening an unforgettable experience.
